Christmas Memories~The Goodie Tree

Today is a very snowy day in Maine. We are expected to get 12-18 inches of snow, I sure hope it hangs around for Christmas. It has been several years since we have had much snow for Christmas and it is just not the same without it. Here is another one of my Christmas Memories....

The Goodie Tree
As a child growing up, our Christmas tree was decorated with goodies instead of the traditional lights and ornaments. When my older sister was very small, she burned her finger on one of the lights on the tree. My Mom decided that we needed decorations on the tree that the kids couldn't get hurt on and from that incident the idea of a Goodie Tree was born.

My Mom would start several weeks before Christmas planning what holiday treats she would make. Lists were made, ingredients were bought and the baking would soon begin.
The baking would take a few weeks and as we were grew old enough, we would all take turns helping out. Whether it was mixing, rolling, cutting, wrapping or the job no one wanted...dishes, we all got (had) to help.

Soon, the goodies were all made, cooled and wrapped individually in plastic wrap and each was tied with a piece of red yarn. They were than placed in the freezer to keep until the tree was up and ready to be decorated.

Once the tree was up, we would help decorate it. The only item on the tree that was not edible was the Santa tree top that had belonged to my Mother when she was a child and the red yarn bows. Everything else decorating the tree was a treat waiting to be enjoyed sometime during the holiday season. The highlight of any day was to beable to choose one of the treats off the tree and by Christmas morning the tree would be looking bare from all the treats we had eaten. My favorite were the gingerbread cookies, they were always the best and I still use that same recipe today.
